History Behind First Father’s Day
It was a chilly drowsy morning on 6th December 1907 when workers at the West Virginia's Fairmont Company coal mine clocked in. The employees were immigrants from Russia, Italy, Eastern and Europe who had come to the US hoping for a better life. Shortly before 10:30am, a spark ignited gasses which caused an explosion that ripped through the mines. Rescue teams were dispatched to the mine less than 30 minutes after the explosion, but poisonous gasses and structural failure hindered all rescue attempts. The damage that wreaked havoc on the mines destroyed ventilation shafts, ripped down support beams, and burnt away the oxygen. A woman named Grace Clayton was deeply moved when she heard of the loss of her father. To honor the lost miners, she arranged a “Father’s Day” commemoration the following year on July 5th, 1908. During President Nixon's presidency, Father's Day was formally recognized as a national holiday in 1972. Since then, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June every year.
Why does the date of Father’s Day change every year?
Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the United States; therefore, the date varies from year to year. It's easier to remember that it occurs every third Sunday rather than memorizing specific dates. In other countries, particularly in Latin America and Europe, Father's Day is usually celebrated on St. Joseph's Day, a Catholic holiday observed on March 19 which is the principal feast day of Saint Joseph in the Catholic Church known as Saint Joseph's Day. Christians believed that Joseph was Jesus’s “father” and an ideal one, therefore they named the special day for dads after him.
Best Destinations to Visit with Dad to Celebrate Father's Day
In order to plan a special day for your father, you must first think of what your father enjoys and how he would like to spend that particular day with you. The first thing you need to ensure is that the date is correct and that you are completely free of any interruptions. Then you may consider anything your father loves doing like if he is a quiet family guy, consider spending the entire day with him, doing his job for him, eating supper with him, playing games and simply reminiscing about good old times as a Father's Day present. If his health allows it and he enjoy outdoor activities or adventures, you have a variety of options for fun outings. List possible outdoor plans based on his preferences for a baseball, golf, or tennis game if he is a sports enthusiast, nature and wildlife lover, adventure lover, foodie who enjoys gourmet food, outgoing entertainment aficionado, or interested in sea-sports or ice-sports like skiing, or aviation sports like skydiving.
