History Rolling Behind the Thanksgiving Day

In September 1620, a tiny ship named the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers, a mix of religious separatists looking for a new home where they can freely practise their beliefs and others drawn by the promise of affluence and property ownership in the New World. They anchored near the tip of Cape Cod, north of their intended objective at the entrance of the Hudson River, after a perilous and miserable 66-day journey. One month later, the Mayflower sailed across Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims went about founding a colony at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure and outbreaks of contagious diseases. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland America on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, who were malnourished and sick, how to grow maize, draw syrup from maple trees, catch fish in rivers, and avoid toxic plants. He also assisted the settlers in forming an alliance with the Wampanoag, a nearby tribe, that would last for more than 50 years and, sadly, remains one of the few examples of concord between European colonists and Native Americans. Following the success of the Pilgrims' first grain harvest in November 1621, the Governor hosted a celebration feast and invited a number of Native American allies, including Wampanoag leader Massasoit.

The Pilgrims may not have used the word at the time, the event lasted three days and is now more popularly regarded as America's "first Thanksgiving."Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a "fowling" mission (to hunt waterfowl such as geese and ducks) in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Many dishes were made with traditional Native American ingredients and cooking methods.
